What the canned food market means for Africa Food Show exhibitors and buyers

Canned food continues to play a key role in food buying across Africa. It supports everyday meals, long shelf life needs and stable supply in both retail and food service. According to IndexBox, canned food consumption across Africa reached around 36 to 37 million tonnes in 2024, with the market valued at over $75 billion. Demand is expected to grow steadily over the next decade.

Large population centres lead consumption. Nigeria, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are the biggest markets by volume. These countries rely on canned products for accessibility, price control and storage. For suppliers, this highlights strong demand for products that are easy to distribute and store.

Africa remains largely self‑sufficient in canned food production. Local manufacturing supplies most of the market, while imports declined sharply in 2024. Exports remained stable, led by Egypt, South Africa and Morocco. This creates opportunity for regional producers who can serve local and cross‑border demand.

Canned vegetables, fish and ready‑to‑use foods continue to form the backbone of the category. Buyers value consistency, predictable pricing and long shelf life. These products support retailers, caterers and hospitality groups that need dependable stock with minimal waste.

While growth is steady rather than fast, the market remains resilient. Urbanisation, food security planning and busy lifestyles continue to support demand. Buyers are focused on products that are simple to store, easy to prepare and suitable for everyday use.

Africa Food Show reflects this reality. The event brings together canned food producers, distributors and buyers who are focused on volume, reliability and long‑term supply. It is a place to meet partners, compare offers and secure supply for the year ahead.

For exhibitors, this is a chance to meet buyers from across retail, wholesale and food service who are actively sourcing. For buyers, it is a chance to review options in one space and speak directly to suppliers.
